last night, we received some profoundly sad news about our lovely friend kassim.

Kassim Mohamed Ali was an amazing human being. he staunchly believed in, and supported LGBT rights and always found a way to create avenues for us to express ourselves. the party scene in KL would not have been the same without him.

i remember the last performance i did for Marketplace. kassim insisted that he himself wanted to pick me up from my hotel in subang, because he was afraid that anyone else relied with the task, might be late. LOLs. that's just the kind of sincere and generous attention he so willingly gave to people. he certainly knew how to make a girl feel special.

i am gonna miss him so much.

thank you kassim for making our lives in KL fun. we are going to miss you immensely.

but most of all thank you for being my friend.

HERE'S TO NEW BEGINNINGS!!!!

i started out in the year on a very unhappy note, unsure where my career as a singer would take me, and feeling very drained. i only had ONE aim - which was to leave the job i was at, which i felt was exploiting me for my talents and clientele. with help from many friends and mentors, i made my move to a bigger city in october. thankfully it all worked out. i am a much happier person, career-wise and personally.

but i have to say this year was quite pivotal in me becoming the person that i wanted to be, because i drew up the courage to leave what was familiar to me, and sailed in unchartered waters. and it was with the help and advice from friends both from facebook and outside of facebook that i did it.

there were many things that i did in 2011 that i would fondly look back on, namely my foray into the fashion world by singing at the closing of the Stylo Mercedez Benz Awards, all the sold out shows at No Black Tie, Bagan's farewell weekend, and the recent Xmas Eve at my new favourite place in Penang, China House.

we have so many exciting things to look forward to together, in 2012, one of which, will of course be the launching of my "Rozz Live at No Black Tie" album.

i just want you to know that each and every one of you has played a very important part in my life, and how much i appreciate you being there for me.

i wanna say a very special thanks to faisol and jendela kl whom have so generously continued to have me as their "barbie doll" of sorts LOL. i am humbled and truly honored.

i have always said that i do not have any fans - just friends who like and support my work. and for being that, i thank you from the bottom of my heart

Fresh from starring in September 2011's Alleycats Tribute concert at Istana Budaya, DASHA LOGAN is a 24 year old singer who has been singing professionally for the past 3 years, but started her singing lifestyle at the age of 4 where she had begun to fall in love with performing. she was offered her first singing gig at the age of 17 and that kicked off her live on the stage. Being a big fan of jazz, funk, soul and RnB, she just loves singing!

Many have a passion for music but Dasha Logan has a gift. Daughter to legendary Loganathan from the chart-topping Alleycats, this talented young lady has been exposed to the music scene and life of a musician before she could even remember.

Now an upcoming artist herself, she has been singing professionally for the past 6 years, but started her journey with music at the tender age of 4 when her love for performing began. At 17 she was offered her first singing gig which kicked off her life on stage and it naturally only took one performance for everyone to see what an amazing talent she has.

ROZZ is a performer that defies anything generic. After attending high school in Penang, he then went to the United States to further his studies in Theatre Studies and International Relations. A studied vocal performer, ROZZ has been privileged to be trained by some of the world's most renowned vocal coaches, namely Imogen Casares and Christine Weitz for Jazz & improv technique.

Trained as a classical vocalist by Anne Ridgeworth from the early age of 4, Rozz has since dedicated himself to the study of music and theatre. His education and career as a performance artist eventually landed him at the epicenter of the actors's domain: New York City, where he was featured in various on and off-Broadway productions.

ROZZ, who credits Barbra Streisand, Joan Sutherland, and Freddie Mercury as major influences, has such a fascinating and commanding presence that one has to see him perform live to truly understand the phenomenon. He currently performs at many different gigs in the region.

I am sure by now you would've heard the rumours. So I am posting this blog post to dispell any mistruths. YES I AM LEAVING. YES BAGAN IS CLOSING. Well, actually they are relocating, but any Bagan without Rozz, won't be the same Bagan anymore.... LOLs...

I made the choice to be based in KL because of the amount of work that I have pledged myself to there, and it would just be too impossible to complete if I wasn't there.

The past 6 years at BAGAN has meant the world to me. So many memories. I have been through thick and thin and everything in between. But what I think I will remember the most is the wonderful people that I have met through my work here.

The people that have come to support me are the most giving, gracious beings. I love you. You have given me so much and I will never be able to re-pay you for your generosity.

And I hope that you will come to spend my last few performances with me, especially at our farewell party!!!

One thing's for sure, Rozz is spurred by the love for his art and there is no stopping this passionate performer

WHAT makes a singer interesting besides having a wonderful voice would of course be if he has a wonderful backstory to go with it! We can safely say that Rozz has the total package - he has a great voice, a unique act and a fascinating story to tell.

First off, Rozz performs in drag. While that might not seem like a big deal, bear in mind that he actually sings the songs as well and not just lip syncs!

Apart from his obvious vocal talents, this performer comes armed with brains as well. Ivy League schooled in international relations and theatre on scholarship, the world was his oyster.

While singing was a great passion, it was kept on the back burner while he served his time with the company which sponsored his studies.

"After I graduated I auditioned for like a million shows on Broadway. I did The Fantastiks and Beauty and The Beast for three months each and then was offered to sing in a club but I came back because my studies were sponsored and I was required to serve the company for six years, or pay them a penalty of RM50,000" Rozz said.

Trained vocally from the young age of four, he said that while his parents wanted him to take up either the organ or piano, he had begged his mother to let him take singing lessons instead, which we must say, have paid off tremendously!

One thing that most will realise about Rozz is that he does not sound like a man when he sings. He sounds like a very talented female singer. So yes, we asked the question on everyone's mind if it was something that came naturally.

"I have an unusual range for a man. My voice is too low to be a woman's and too high to be a man's, but yes it was something I was born with," Rozz said.

While his specialty is apparent, Rozz is quick to add that he is, first and foremost, a musician.

"Drag is fun and light but I always remind people that I am a musician first before I am a drag queen. I think it brings out the character of the one that is brave to tease the audience, and say outrageous things but my mannerisms and the way I speak and sing is the same whether I am in or out of drag."

For Rozz, his major music influences include Handel, Freddie Mercury and Sondheim.

"There are people in KL, like the amazing Isaac Entry, whom I am in absolute awe of. Maybe one day I might get to work with him.

"I am very technical when I watch others perform so I look for clarity, tone and pitching. However, phrasing and emotion are equally important too. Most of all when I watch a singer, I want to be emotionally moved by what they are singing," Rozz said.

He added that every singer is a work in progress, and it is important to continue to keep improving by learning new things.

When The Malay Mail caught Rozz's performance at No Black Tie, the venue was almost bursting at the seams on a Sunday night, but he said that it was not always this way when he first started out. However he is not a man who is afraid to chase his dreams.

"I was offered a job in a place called BAGAN where I still perform. The first time I went up and sang, I decided to write in my letter of resignation to my day job. Yes, it was difficult financially at first, but I have never been happier," Rozz said.

"Unfortunately, most of the work I do in Penang goes highly unnoticed and unappreciated. I only started building a name for myself once I started performing at No Black Tie about two years ago."

If you have a chance to catch Rozz perform, you would realise that he injects something different into almost every song he sings by rearranging it or putting it into a medley.

"I think my audience knows that every time I put on a show, there was a lot of work put into it and everyone appreciates something different, and I am that, if not anything."

Rozz, who is always dressed to the nines during his performances said that a JENDELA KL dress is something that every singer should possess besides a great voice.

What else can he do apart from singing? Well, he is pretty adept at the piano.

" I also have an unsurpassed ability to shop for clothes, bags and shoes!" Rozz laughed.

On a more serious note, his favourite part about doing what he does is the relationships he has forged through his work. "I have met some of the most amazing human beings."

What does the future have in store for this multi-talented musician?

"I am about to start a community arts project in Penang, and a website designed to promote the work and art of trans-gendered people. I will also start shooting for a movie soon."

He also added that an album recording called Rozz-Live at No Black Tie is in the pipeline.

One thing's for sure, he is spurred by the love for his art and there is no stopping this passionate performer!

WHEN Rozz strutted the stage on Sunday night in a form-fitting backless dress, the first thing that instantly struck the audience was how good he was at working it. Yup, he really knew how to work that dress too!

It was a night of disco where Rozz and his band, Frequency, took on songs from the queens of disco and then some. Think Gloria Gaynor, Madonna and Donna Summer with some Gaga and Dreamgirls thrown in for good measure.

Rozz certainly has a good voice and that translated to the throngs of people who came out on a Sunday night to see him perform. No Black Tie was packed to the brim, with barely space to squeeze out to the toilet.

We could talk to death about his performance vocally, but we won't. It was his charisma and his way of engaging with the crowd that separated him from the rest of the performers out there.

He teased the audience with banter and jokes, switching seamlessly between fast and slow numbers as well as doing personalised renditions of classic numbers.

He slowed down and did a slow, sensual version of Madonna's Like A Virgin, even pausing half way to say "I said 'LIKE a virgin', and besides, why are you all laughing? How you know I am not a virgin?" which brought cat calls and even louder cheers from the crowd.

It was also a night of mash ups, where songs from DreamGirls and Moulin Rouge and many others were given new life. The crowd by this point was already pumping, with many dancing and gyrating to the sultry voice of Rozz as well as singing along really loudly.

He also broke out into a medley of good old Abba songs much to the excitement of the audience as well. When he started singing Karma Chameleon, the audience instantly recognised it and sang along but Rozz stopped the band and posed a question, "You know what this means right?... You are all old! This song was from AGES ago!".

That of course did not deter the audience from singing along, with the dancing now taken to the table tops.

When it was time to end the show, the crowd was still going strong, shouting for more. And not just one more song but two! Rozz, in good spirit of things, just kept going, ending the night way past midnight after close to three hours of singing with a number by Adele.

Rozz is not just a singer, he is a performer and with the lyrics of the disco queens combined, Rozz was without a doubt the queen of the night.

ROZZ's STREISAND RETROSPECTIVE at NO BLACK TIE, JUNE 6th 2006

"The biggest challenge in doing a night of all-Streisand songs, is picking the right songs that'll keep the audience moved, as well as entertained", according to ROZZ. Celebrating his 6th show at No Black Tie, ROZZ still considers himself a newcomer to the KL live-music scene.

A studied vocal performer, ROZZ was trained as a classical vocalist by Anne Ridgeworth from the early age of 4. And ever since then, ROZZ has dedicated himself to the study of music and theatre. He himself admits that tonight brings special meaning for him because, "I grew up wanting to be Barbra Streisand."

ROZZ, who credits La Streisand, Joan Sutherland, and Freddie Mercury as major influences, has such a fascinating and commanding presence that one has to see him perform live to truly understand the phenomenon.

Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that the arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice. We must always go forward, towards greater liberty and greater equality, not backward.

You know, for me, the realization that two people should have the right to form a sacred union regardless of their gender was strengthened when I saw a performance of the play The Normal Heart in 1985. After feeling the love those two men had for each other, I dare anybody not to want them to get married by the end.
The law cannot dictate matters of the heart. When two people form a deep bond, there is usually a soul connection, and the soul has no gender. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are fundamental rights in this world. Happiness can be many things - a good meal, a good friend, a warm puppy, and certainly...love.

How can anyone legislate whom you can love? That is a human right, the right to love and the right to be loved. And when you love someone, whether you're in a heterosexual or same-gender relationship, shouldn't you be able to visit them in the hospital when they're sick or dying? Shouldn't everyone have the right to enter into a loving, legally binding, committed relationship that takes on special responsibilities and obligations?

Current laws and legislation don't go far enough in protecting equal rights. We must not deny gay families many of the benefits that help keep heterosexual families strong... pensions, EPF, inheritance, the right to take unpaid leave to care for a spouse...the list goes on and on.......

ROZZ (and gang) goes to see the US Pacific Fleet Band Performance at Dewan Sri Pinang!

Cravingzzz, craveeingzz.... (in the style of that Marjorie Dawes from "Little Britain")

I have been craving for a real live Big Band show since I arrived in Penang a year ago. My dream came true last Monday. And what's more, it was gonna be performed by cute Navy boys from USA. (Grin)...

I gotta admit, there were things that somewhat miffed me. The announcer sounded like she was being held at gunpoint, and then the Chairman of PESSBAND(or whatever) spoke with the eloquence of a vegetable-seller from Batu Lanchang market. After all these tedious melodramatic exchange of pleasantries and gifts, the show finally started. I couldn't believe they had the nerve to print "8pm Sharp" on the invitation card. There is a Malay idiom that best describes this - "Membukak pekong di dada".
But more about the boys... I tell ya, from the start of this 45-minute bit to the finish, I was in awe of these boys, especially the pianist (no he wasn't that cute... but Regina, whom I went to the concert with, swore that she was gonna get married to him next week). His style was superb! The band was polished and very very, well, American... Their instrumental repetoire was really really good. There was one point during Benny Goodman's "Sing!Sing!Sing" that I think I even had an orgasm!!! Yes it was THAT good.
Now, let's delve into the nitty gritty. When they brought the vocalist out, everything died for me. This is prime example of how a mediocre vocalist can ruin a perfectly good band. Mr Morales sang some Sinatra, and then he did cheezy Michael Bolton-esque covers, and the poor boy even attempted a medley of Temptations' stuff.
Now, I may not know much, but I know my history. Them Mexicans snuck into Texas (Tay-Haas they pronounce it) to become maids and gardeners, NOT to sing the only legacy brought by those poor slaves. He had no business doing R&B. And they had the nerve to claim on their flyer that they were renowned for their Jazz repertoire. It was like drinking Nescafe in a Starbucks. Cremated coffee. Yuck.
Well, the part that involved the vocalist was at best, cheezy. But then again, they are Americans. And you have to accept that being cheezy is part and parcel of being American. We can forgive them for that, surely.... think "Full House". Yesss.... THAT cheezy.
But the band was good. I maintain. Sans vocals, of course. They could have shown a little more improv, you know... what the hell is Jazz without improv? But to the untrained ear....
I still maintain, whatever they lacked in vocals or improv they MORE than made up for with crisp, clean American good looks.
Now next time they come, somebody should give me ample warnin. I'll don my best Judy Garland get-up, climb on stage, and DEMAND they perform "Get Happy" with me.
